Area Description

MOUNTAIN ASH

 

The town lies about 4.5 miles south of the town of Aberdare and approximately 19 miles northwest of Cardiff. The village and community of Mountain As is well stocked with traditional butchers, bakers and greengrocers as well as banks, travel agents and chemists, recent renovation has made the street an attractive blend of pastel-coloured buildings with pleasant views of the wooded hillsides above the town.

 

The shops in Mountain Ash are centred on Oxford Street, which runs parallel to the Cynon at the foot of a steep slope densely chequered with mid-nineteenth century terraced houses.

 

Most of the traditional industry from this area has now disappeared and a substantial proportion of the working population travel to work in Cardiff and the M4 corridor. Many residents also work in the nearby towns of Aberdare and Pontypridd.

 

Aberdare spreads across a broad vale with an open aspect. Home to over 35,000 people and known as the Queen of the Valleys.
